The Urban Development Institute of Quebec (UDI) is proud to announce the appointment of Jean-Marc Fournier as CEO, effective September 28. He will take over for interim CEO Carl Cloutier.

Acting quickly for our industry
After a thorough recruitment process conducted in cooperation with an external firm, Jean-Marc Fournier emerged as the candidate of choice to head the organization representing Quebec’s commercial real estate industry. Mr. Fournier’s extensive experience, collaborative approach, and keen understanding of the issues in a time of major change were key factors in the UDI’s decision.

“We are very pleased to welcome Jean-Marc Fournier to the management team,” said Jean Laramée, chair of the board of directors. “We wanted to act quickly to properly serve our members, deal with the challenges at hand, and pursue our mission of encouraging urban intensification. I would like to acknowledge the exceptional contribution of Carl Cloutier, who has successfully led a range of concurrent projects in an uncertain economic situation. Mr. Cloutier will continue to serve as senior strategic advisor for the UDI, as he has done for more than two years.”

Before joining UDI, Jean-Marc Fournier was a strategic advisor with SYRUS. For 25 years prior to that, Mr. Fournier held various positions in the political arena. He retired from politics in 2018 after serving as Liberal Member of the National Assembly for the riding of Saint-Laurent, Government House Leader, and Minister responsible for Canadian Relations.

Contributing to the economic recovery of the real estate sector
The pandemic will deeply affect the real estate industry for many months, accentuating problems that already existed, such as the retail industry crisis, the exodus from Montreal toward the suburbs, the occupancy of offices, the difficulty to adapt housing supply to demand and the tax burden on owners and merchants.

“I am thrilled to be joining the UDI,” said newly appointed CEO Jean-Marc Fournier. “It is clearly more important than ever to work together to promote economic recovery and the vitality of urban centers. The real estate sector deserves special attention in this time of physical distancing and increased telework and e-commerce. Nothing will ever be the same again, and we’ll need a new kind of teamwork between private and public players.”
